We decided to include Kids In Distress in our will because we only have one child and we wanted to make sure Kids In Distress-an organization we have supported and been involved with since 1983-continued after we were not around anymore.
I wanted to make sure that Kids In Distress received my bequest, so I went to a lawyer and opened a Charitable Remainder Trust. We receive 8% interest on the money we put in, which is phenomenal. Plus we receive added tax benefits.
I began volunteering with KID in 1983 when I was teaching public school. We still volunteer. Every Wednesday my husband I come to the Kid campus and volunteer, usually for the KITES (Kids Infant and Toddler Emergency Shelter) program. I bring with me what my local Publix has collected for KID during the week.
When Kids In Distress introduced the Grand-mentoring program, I jumped on the bandwagon. I said I would do it as long as it was not too far from my house. The family I was paired with is lovely. In fact, they are part of my family now. Even if I didn't still do Grand-mentoring, they would still be in my life.
The family consists of two biological children and two children from the KID Foster Care Program. They recently adopted one of the children through the KID adoption program and the other is on the adoption list.
The children get along so well. You would think that the biological children would not get along with the foster children, but they do. They are one big happy family.
My husband I see them once a week and we celebrate holidays and birthdays with them. We take the children to the zoo, the movies-but most often we babysit. We tell the parents: you take a break. We don't care if you just take a walk-take the night off!
We have received in return unconditional love from this family. This is a wonderful, giving family. We have even been invited to the biological children's communion.
I talk with the mother now 1-2 times every week. The other day she called me. I was shopping at Sam's and dropped everything to meet with her-and then I went right back to shopping because that's what Grandmas do.
